Long Lake Loop Trail, a 4.5-mile loop near Clio, offers a moderate hike through the pine forests and meadows of the Blairsden-Graeagle area in Plumas County. The trail is open from June through October, which means you’ll want to plan your visit during those months when snow has cleared from the higher elevations.
Dogs are welcome on leash throughout the loop, so you’ll have company from other hikers out with their dogs on weekends. The trail itself is well-maintained and doesn’t present any major obstacles—it’s the kind of hike where you can focus on the scenery rather than scrambling over rocks or navigating confusing junctions. The elevation gain is steady but not punishing, making it manageable for dogs in decent shape and for hikers who want a workout without overcommitting.
What makes this loop particularly nice is the variety. You’ll move through different terrain as you circle the lake, passing through shaded forest sections where your dog can cool off, then opening up to views across the water. Early morning is your best bet if you want to avoid crowds and keep your dog from getting overheated, especially on warmer days in summer.
The Shasta Cascade region at this elevation tends to be cooler than lower-elevation trails, which dogs generally appreciate. Bring plenty of water for both of you—while there’s a lake nearby, you won’t want to rely on it as your only water source. The trailhead parking area has space for several cars, though it can fill up on nice weekends during peak season.
