Founded by the son of a California Gold Rush miner, the dog-friendly Marina Motel was built to celebrate the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge in the late 1930s. Designed as one of San Francisco’s first “motor-hotels” for the dawning of the automobile age, it’s still family-owned and operated today by the original owner’s granddaughters. That kind of continuity matters—you’re staying at a place with real roots in the city.
The rooms have queen beds and separate kitchens, which is genuinely useful when you’re traveling with a dog. Free parking is included, and there’s a small dog run on-site so your dog doesn’t have to go far for bathroom breaks. The staff provides poop bags for cleanup, and housekeeping will give you a bed cover if you didn’t bring one—just let them know you’re traveling with your dog and want to keep the furniture protected.
There are a few practical things to know about their pet policy. Dogs can’t be left alone in rooms unless they’re crated, which is standard for most places. If you’re heading out for the day and leaving your dog in the car, tell the front desk first. Fair warning though: they don’t allow dogs to be left in vehicles during the hot summer months, which makes sense for a San Francisco motel that fills up with tourists during peak season. Plan accordingly if you’re visiting in summer and need to explore the city during the day.
The pet fee is $15 per night for the first dog and $10 for a second one. Given that this is San Francisco and the motel includes parking plus kitchen access, those rates are reasonable for the area. The Marina neighborhood itself is walkable with plenty of nearby spots for dogs, and you’re close to the bay if you want to take your dog down to the water on a cooler day.
