Marshall Canyon Regional Park sprawls across 119 acres in the La Verne foothills, and it’s one of those places where you can actually do a lot more than just walk your dog around—though the trails are genuinely nice for that too. The park has forty campsites if you’re planning an overnight trip, which means you could bring your dog camping without needing an RV or complicated setup.

The layout is interesting because it’s split between recreational areas and functional spaces. There’s a full tree nursery on the grounds, which creates a different kind of scenery than your typical park—you’ll see plantings and landscaping that give it character. The Fred M. Palmer Equestrian Center takes up a significant portion with its training arena, judge’s stand, individual horse corrals, and water troughs, so you’ll likely encounter riders and horses, which most dogs handle fine but worth noting if yours has strong prey drive or gets anxious around unfamiliar animals.

The recreational side has everything: forty horseshoe pits, built-in barbecues scattered throughout, a sand volleyball court, and a full-size stage with dance floor and circle fire pit area. This makes it popular for group events, so weekends can get busy. The picturesque trails wind through the property and are good for both hiking and mountain biking, which means you’ll encounter cyclists—not dangerous but something to keep your dog aware of, especially on narrower sections.

The bird watching is legitimate; the foothills location brings in decent variety, and if your dog is content walking at a steady pace while you’re looking up at trees, you’ll have a peaceful time. The water troughs scattered around for the horses mean there’s water access if you need it during warm months, though bringing your own water bottle is smart anyway.

The park works well for people who want more than just a simple walk—you can combine hiking with a picnic, or make an actual camping weekend out of it. Just time your visit to avoid peak event days if you prefer quieter trails.
