The wide-open grassy field at Meanley Dog Park in the Miramar neighborhood off Meanley Drive gives dogs genuine room to move without cramped corners or awkward chokepoints. The park splits into two zones—a main area and a dedicated smaller enclosure for dogs under 25 pounds—so smaller dogs won’t get bowled over by larger ones. Mature trees provide substantial shade, which matters considerably during San Diego’s summer heat, and the grass surface is forgiving on paw pads. The terrain is relatively flat with no significant elevation changes, making it accessible for older dogs or those still building stamina. Water bowls are available throughout the park, though bringing your own collapsible bowl or water bottle is practical on busy days when supplies run low.
Dogs are allowed off-leash in both the main area and the small-dog section. The park is open dawn to dusk. Waste stations are stationed throughout the property, and the park enforces a “clean up after your dog” policy that most regulars follow. The separate small-dog enclosure works well if you have a toy breed that gets anxious around larger dogs.
The park sits about ten minutes northeast of downtown San Diego and has a parking lot that rarely fills up completely, even on weekends. Crowds shift throughout the day—mornings tend toward the quieter side, and late afternoons bring the after-work rush. Sunday mornings draw the most dogs, so weekday afternoons or early morning hours tend to be less crowded if you prefer lower traffic.
