The Mendocino Coast Humane Society is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that was created by Coastal residents who wanted a ‘no-kill’ alternative to the County’s Animal Control. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of animals along Northern California’s coastline. Serving approximately 96 miles of the Mendocino coast, MCHS provides a safe haven for homeless animals, offering them medical care, shelter, and the opportunity to find permanent, loving homes. As a no-kill shelter, MCHS is committed to preventing the euthanasia of healthy and treatable companion animals.

MCHS offers a range of services to the community, including a low-cost spay/neuter program, a veterinary clinic, and a mobile adoption van that brings adoptable animals to various locations. The adoption center, located in Fort Bragg, features comfortable accommodations for animals, such as indoor/outdoor kennels with heated floors for dogs and condos with shelves and scratching posts for cats. Additionally, the organization operates “The Ark Thrift Store,” with all proceeds benefiting the animals under their care.

Community involvement is a cornerstone of MCHS’s mission. The organization encourages local residents and visitors to participate in programs like “Borrow-A-Buddy,” which allows individuals to take a shelter dog on a day-long outing, providing the animal with socialization and exposure to potential adopters. Volunteer opportunities abound, from dog walking and cat socializing to assisting with events and maintenance tasks. Through these efforts, MCHS strives to inspire public awareness of animal needs and promote responsible pet ownership.
