The Merced River/North Fork Trailhead sits in Midpines, right in that beautiful stretch of Mariposa County that serves as the gateway to Yosemite. It’s an easy drive from the main park entrance, making it a solid option if you want river access without dealing with Yosemite’s stricter regulations.

The trail itself follows along the Merced River, so you’re getting water views the whole way. The setting is classic foothill terrain—oak woodlands mixed with ponderosa pines, and the river creates this nice cooling effect on warmer days. Your dog can splash around in the water, though you’ll want to watch for slippery rocks along the banks. The trail isn’t overly technical, which means it works for dogs of different fitness levels. You’ll see other hikers and their dogs pretty regularly, so it’s a social spot without feeling crowded.

Water access is actually one of the best parts here. There are spots where the river widens out a bit and your dog can wade in easily. Just be aware that the current can vary depending on the season—spring snowmelt makes it faster and more powerful than summer flows. I’d recommend bringing a collapsible bowl anyway in case you want your dog to drink from something other than the river.

The parking area is straightforward, and there’s usually space even on weekends. From there it’s a short walk to the main trail. The elevation gain is moderate, so it’s not a grueling hike. If your dog gets hot easily, aim for early morning or late afternoon—the foothill heat can be intense in summer.

The trail has earned a solid 4.8 out of 5 rating from other visitors, and that reputation seems earned based on what you get there. Before you head out, call ahead to confirm the current pet policies and any access changes. Conditions can shift seasonally, and it’s worth confirming your dog meets any requirements they might have in place.
