Methuselah Trail

Schulman Grove, White Mountain Rd., Bishop, California 93514

(760) 873-2400

The Methuselah Trail, located within the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest of Inyo National Forest near Bishop, offers a 4.5-mile loop that guides hikers through groves of ancient bristlecone pines, some of the oldest living trees on Earth. Starting near the Schulman Grove Visitor Center, the trail features interpretive signs and rest benches scattered throughout, providing insights into the area’s natural history and plenty of opportunities to pause and take in panoramic views of the southern Sierra Nevada mountains.

The trailhead sits at about 10,000 feet above sea level, so you’ll want to acclimate a bit before hitting the trail. Expect an elevation gain of approximately 900 feet as you loop through the forest. The high elevation can be intense—both for you and your dog—so plan accordingly. These old trees grow slowly in the thin mountain air, and the landscape reflects that spare, windswept character. The trail itself has narrow and rocky sections that require careful footing, especially if your dog tends to pull or move quickly. The gnarled, twisted bark of the bristlecone pines is something you don’t see anywhere else, and hiking past them never gets old.

Dogs are welcome on the Methuselah Trail as long as they’re leashed the entire time. The biggest consideration is water. At this elevation with limited shade, you’ll need to bring plenty for both of you—more than you’d think necessary. The high altitude means the sun feels intense despite cooler temperatures. There’s also the simple fact that the trail is remote; once you’re out there, you’re committed. The rocky terrain combined with altitude makes this a moderately challenging hike rather than a casual stroll, so realistic expectations help everyone have a better experience. The reward is time among some genuinely ancient company, with views that stretch across the high desert basin.
