Milagra Ridge

Milagra Ridge

641 Sharp Park Rd., Pacifica, California 94044

(650) 355-4122

On the windswept coast south of the City, Milagra Ridge offers views to the edge of the Pacific horizon. This scrub-covered ridgeline is critical habitat, home to Red-tailed Hawks and the endangered mission blue butterfly. It is the site of intensive restoration by Park Stewardship staff and volunteers. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Milagra Ridge is a former Nike missile site that has been carefully transformed into a protected natural area, and it is meticulously maintained with roped-in trails and extensive native plant restoration throughout.

The main trail at Milagra Ridge is a 1.4-mile loop that is generally considered an easy route, taking an average of about 35 minutes to complete. The ridgeline runs east to west, offering impressive panoramic views of the cliffside city of Pacifica, the Pacific Ocean, and the coastline stretching north and south. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Farallon Islands. The trail winds through coastal scrub and grassland, and the wildflowers in spring are particularly beautiful. It is a wonderful spot for a peaceful morning walk with your dog, away from the busier trails of the region.

Milagra’s proximity to urban development, its limited size and its rare wildlife make it exceptionally sensitive to human disturbance. Therefore, visitors are required to stay on trails and pets must be leashed at all times. This is strictly enforced to protect the endangered mission blue butterfly and other sensitive species that depend on this habitat. A composting vault toilet has been installed at the trailhead for visitors’ convenience, and there is roadside parking at the Milagra Ridge gate at the end of College Drive.

Directions: The entrance to Milagra Ridge is off of Sharp Park Road in Pacifica. From Highway 1, follow Sharp Park Road to the east, or from Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35), follow Sharp Park Road to the west. Turn north on College Drive and continue about 1/4 mile to roadside parking at the Milagra Ridge gate. The area is open during daylight hours and there is no entrance fee.

Dog owners will find Milagra Ridge to be a refreshing and scenic spot for a leashed walk with their dog. The trails are well-marked and easy to navigate, making it suitable for dogs of all sizes and energy levels. The ocean breezes keep things cool even on warm days, and the relatively short loop means it works well as a quick outing or a leisurely stroll. Just remember to bring waste bags, keep your dog on leash, and stay on the designated trails to help preserve this special place for future visitors, both human and canine.
