Montevalle Dog Park

840 Duncan Ranch Rd, Chula Vista, California

Montevalle Dog Park sprawls across a hillside with open grass fields that slope downward toward the valley, giving you sight lines across most of the park even when it’s moderately crowded. The terrain is mostly packed dirt and grass, with enough elevation change to work your dog’s legs without being punishing—gentle grades rather than steep pitches. On clear days you can see across the San Diego backcountry, which makes the spot feel less urban than it actually is. The park sits at roughly 600 feet elevation along the Otay River valley, about 15 minutes south of downtown Chula Vista.

Dogs can run off-leash throughout the main park area, though you’ll want to keep them on-leash on the access paths. There’s no official fee, and the park doesn’t enforce breed or size restrictions. Water bowls are available near the entrance, though during warmer months (May through September) they run dry more often than not—bring your own water bottle and collapsible bowl. Shade comes from scattered oak trees mostly clustered on the north side of the park; the southern and eastern portions are fully exposed, so midday heat in summer can be intense.

Timing matters here. Early morning visits before 9 a.m. tend to be quieter, with a different crowd mix than late afternoon when families with multiple dogs arrive. Fall and winter bring the most comfortable temperatures and the most reliable water access. The parking lot is small—six or seven spaces—which means weekend afternoons fill up quickly. Weekday mornings are your best bet for a less hectic environment; arriving after 4 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday often means circling back to find a spot.

If you want to extend your outing, the Otay Valley Regional Park trail system connects nearby with multi-use paths that allow leashed dogs.
