Mount Rubidoux

Mt Rubidoux, Riverside, California 92501

(951) 351-6250

Mount Rubidoux rises just west of downtown Riverside, a 1,200-foot peak that’s become the city’s most recognizable landmark. What makes it special isn’t just the views—it’s the layers of history packed into those 161 acres. The cross at the summit, dedicated to Father Junípero Serra, is visible from miles away, and the mountain still hosts the oldest continuous outdoor Easter Sunrise service in the country, a tradition dating back over a century.

The park itself is car-free, which actually makes it better for walking your dog. You’ve got 3.5 miles of paved roads spiraling up the mountain, plus several dirt trails branching off if you want something less formal. The paved routes are well-maintained and packed enough that you’ll see other walkers, joggers, and cyclists most days, especially mornings and late afternoons. The dirt trails get quieter and offer more shade under the scattered oak and pine, though they’re steeper and rockier.

Every Fourth of July, the city launches fireworks from the summit—something to keep in mind if your dog is noise-sensitive. Throughout the year, you’ll spot various memorials and historic markers along the routes, little reminders of why Riverside residents care so much about this place.

Start early if you can. The hike to the top takes about 45 minutes on the main paved loop, and the views across the city and out toward the San Bernardino Mountains are worth it, especially on clear days. Parking at adjacent Ryan Bonaminio Park is your best bet—there’s a decent lot there, and you’ll find restrooms during park hours. The park itself is open dawn to dusk, and there’s enough elevation gain to tire out most dogs without being punishing.
