Mussel Rock Park and Beach is a scenic stretch of coastline located on the San Francisco Peninsula in Daly City.
Trails climb through grassy coastal hills above the ocean, offering wide views of the Pacific and hang gliders soaring overhead. Dogs are allowed on leash on the trails, and the open terrain makes it feel wild and windswept. On clear days you can see all the way down the coast toward Montara Mountain and even out to the Farallon Islands on especially clear afternoons.
The beach sits below the cliffs of Mussel Rock Park and offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, dramatic rock formations, and a rugged shoreline that feels far removed from the nearby city. Visitors often come for the quiet atmosphere, coastal trails, and panoramic bluff-top viewpoints. The area is also geologically interesting because the San Andreas Fault reaches the coastline here, adding to the dramatic landscape that attracts hikers, photographers, and nature lovers.
Dogs are allowed on Mussel Rock Beach as long as they are leashed, making it a popular stop for locals and visitors exploring the Bay Area with their dogs. Dogs must be on leash everywhere in the park and on the beach.
Mussel Rock is perhaps best known as one of the Bay Area’s top hang gliding and paragliding launch sites. The coastal cliffs create ideal updrafts, and on breezy days you and your dog can watch colorful gliders soar overhead from the bluff-top trails. It is a unique and entertaining experience that adds an extra element of fun to your visit. The interconnected trail network winds through the hillside with multiple viewpoints, though be aware that some paths are steep and can be slippery when wet.
Please follow a few safety tips when bringing your dog with you. The steep cliffs and wildlife in the area mean it is best to keep dogs under close control, and the cold Pacific waters and strong currents can be dangerous for swimming. Coyotes have been spotted in the park, so keeping your dog leashed is important not just for the rules but for their safety as well. The open shoreline and long coastal paths provide plenty of space for dogs to walk, sniff, and explore alongside their owners.
The park is located at the end of Westline Drive, not far from Highway 1 near the border of Pacifica and Daly City. Free parking is available at the trailhead. There are no restrooms or water fountains, so be sure to bring water for both you and your dog. Despite its proximity to urban neighborhoods, Mussel Rock rewards visitors with rugged beauty and sweeping ocean panoramas, making it a worthwhile outing for adventurous dogs and their owners.
