Plaskett Creek Campground

Los Padres National Forest, Big Sur, California 93464

(805) 434-1996

Plaskett Creek Campground sits on the Big Sur coast within easy reach of Sand Dollar Beach, the largest sandy beach in the area, and it’s one of the few places around here where you can actually camp with your dog and have beach access. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the setup works well for both tent camping and RVs with individual sites plus three group campsites. Each spot has a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill, so you can cook dinner while hearing the Pacific from most locations.

The basic amenities are solid—flush toilets, sinks, and drinking water throughout. Nothing fancy, but everything you need to be comfortable. The real draw is what’s beyond your campsite. A short walk takes you and your dog down to Sand Dollar Beach, where you can spend your days exploring tide pools, fishing (permits required if you’re 16 or older), or just walking the shoreline. The beach is wide and open, and having your dog on leash while navigating the sand and rocks is manageable, especially if your dog is used to coastal conditions.

The campground itself feels genuinely integrated into the landscape rather than carved out of it. You’re camping in an actual environment, not in a parking lot with hookups. The sound of surf carries across the sites, and at night it’s dark enough to see stars. This is Big Sur—dramatic, moody, occasionally windy—so come prepared for weather changes rather than expecting sunny beach resort vibes.

If you’re planning a trip where you want to spend days exploring the coast with your dog without having to drive back and forth from elsewhere, this works well. The location on Highway 1 is convenient for accessing other Big Sur trails and viewpoints too. Just check current availability and pet policies when you book, since conditions and rules can shift seasonally.
