Dogs can ride the railbikes here, which is honestly one of the coolest ways to experience the Mendocino Coast redwoods. The custom-built electric railbikes are quiet enough that you’ll actually hear the forest around you as you pedal along the famous Redwood Route that the Skunk Train uses. It’s a two-person setup, so you can bring your dog in one seat while you pedal, or split the pedaling duty with a travel companion.

The route follows Pudding Creek and crosses several wooden trestle bridges that feel pretty dramatic when you’re gliding over them silently. The redwoods here are genuinely massive—the kind that make you understand why people keep coming back to this part of Mendocino County. You’re not just riding past them; you’re moving slowly enough to actually take them in.

About halfway through, you stop at Glen Blair Junction for a 50-minute break. Most people use this time to eat a picnic lunch, but there’s also a loop trail you can walk if your dog has energy left. The trail takes you deeper into the grove, past wild iris and trillium when they’re blooming, and crosses an old stone arched bridge that’s been there so long it feels like part of the landscape itself. It’s a good stretch for your legs and your dog’s legs.

The whole experience is gentle and manageable—nothing extreme—which makes it surprisingly good for dogs who aren’t used to serious hiking. The ride back to the Fort Bragg depot follows the same route, so you get the scenery twice but from a slightly different perspective. Bring layers because the redwoods keep things cool even on warmer days, and the shade means the temperature can shift as you move between open sections and thicker forest. The trip takes about three hours total, which is long enough to feel like an adventure but short enough that most dogs handle it well.
