Dog-friendly Fort Bragg
They say every dog has his day; well, your dog is bound to have the perfect day, night or multiple-night stay in the coastal Mendocino County town of Fort Bragg. Located just north of the town of Mendocino, this once-booming fishing community is rich in dog-friendly lodging, dining, attractions, hikes and beaches — and the Pacific is never more than a short trot away.
Dog-friendly lodging runs from waterfront motels to harbor inns to cabins and RV resorts. Bedded-down options include the Beachcomber Motel, Surf & Sand Lodge, Beach House Inn, Noyo Harbor Inn, Anchor Lodge, Harbor Lite Lodge, Seabird Lodge, North Cliff Hotel, Coast Inn & Spa, Pine Beach Inn, Emerald Dolphin Inn, Best Western Vista Manor Lodge, Super 8 by Wyndham and Motel 6. For cabins, Shoreline Cottages. For RV travelers, MacKerricher State Park, Hidden Pines RV Park, Sportsman’s RV Park and Fort Bragg Leisure RV Resort.
Attractions in Fort Bragg include the Skunk Train, the Railbikes on the Noyo and the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.
Hikes and parks span the headlands and redwood country. Trot the Noyo Headlands Coastal Trail, the Haul Road Recreation Trail, the Ten Mile Beach Trail, the Hare Creek Beach Trail and the Forest History Trail, or stretch out in MacKerricher State Park, Jackson Demonstration State Forest, Pomo Bluffs Park or Belinda Point. Two fenced dog parks — the Fort Bragg Dog Park and MCDOG Park — give pups room to run off-leash in town.
Beaches include Glass Beach, Jug Handle Beach, and two off-leash favorites: Noyo Beach and Seaside Beach.
On the water, dogs are welcome aboard for charter fishing and whale watching with All Aboard Adventures and Anchor Charter Boats, and for paddling with Liquid Fusion Kayaking.
Dog-friendly dining runs from harborside seafood to brewpubs and cafés: HarborView Bistro & Bar, The Wharf, Sea Pal Cove, Piaci Pub & Pizzeria, North Coast Brewing Company, Overtime Brewing Company, Tall Guy Brewing, Noyo River Grill, Noyo Fish Company, Princess Seafood Restaurant, Cucina Verona, Mayan Fusion, Casa Del Sol, Cafe One, Rhody’s Garden Cafe, Laurel Deli & Desserts, Django’s Rough Bar Cafe, Jenny’s Giant Burger and the Mendocino Cookie Company. For a local pour, Pacific Star Winery and Schnaubelt Distillery.
Pet services on the coast cover the basics: vets at Mendocino Coast Animal Hospital, Covington Creek Veterinary and Detrick Veterinary Hospital; grooming at Coast Grooming; food and supplies at Fort Bragg Feed & Pet and Highway 20 Feed; and the Mendocino Coast Humane Society if you’re in town and want to give back.
