Folsom isn’t only a convenient destination for Northern California visitors, it’s also diverse, offering many options for “socially distanced” outdoor recreation. Start by stepping out on a segment of the 32-mile American River Bike Trail, which runs from downtown Sacramento to downtown Folsom. The multi-use path hugs the river of the same name, offering endless opportunities to wander down to the water and let Fido make a splash.
Another option: Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. While dogs aren’t allowed on swimming beaches (which can be crowded this time of year), there are plenty of other places along the shore to hike and splash with your pup. Ditto at nearby Lake Natoma, where a loop trail winds from downtown Folsom around the perimeter of the popular kayaking and sailing lake. Elsewhere in Folsom, stroll a section of the Humbug-Willow Creek trail system, which menders 15 miles through a variety of terrain.
In historic Old Town Folsom, you’ll find many restaurants getting innovative with outdoor dining options (as of now, indoor dining is not allowed per state guidelines). Visit Folsom has a list of them, and with few exceptions, you’ll find your well behaved dog as welcome as you are. Many other restaurants offer pickup or delivery—perfect for a picnic in one of the city’s many parks.
