Russian Gulch State Park in Mendocino offers a genuine coastal experience where leashed dogs are welcome to explore the beach and tide pools alongside you. The sandy shore stretches out with unobstructed views of the Pacific, and the ocean breeze hits differently when you’re walking with your dog—there’s something about their enthusiasm for the salt water and sand that makes the whole visit feel fresher.

Low tide reveals tide pools tucked between the rocks, and this is where things get really interesting. You’ll spot starfish, anemones, and other marine life in the shallow pools. Your dog will be curious about the water and the smells, though you’ll want to keep them close since the rocks are uneven and slippery. It’s one of those spots where you can spend an hour just poking around and discovering new things.

The beach itself is spacious enough that your dog can move around freely while on leash. They can wade in the shallows, dig in the sand, and generally do what dogs do at the beach. There are designated picnic areas above the beach where you can sit with a packed lunch and watch the waves while your dog rests nearby.

The inland trails that wind through the park’s forest aren’t open to dogs, so your visit focuses entirely on the beach experience. That’s actually fine—the beach is where most people come anyway, and it’s the better part of the park for dogs.

The nearby town of Mendocino has several places to grab food or supplies before heading to the park. Parking at the park fills up on weekends, especially during summer, so arriving earlier in the day helps. The coastal bluffs surrounding the beach are dramatic and make for excellent photos, particularly in late afternoon light when the rocks turn golden.
