San Elijo Hills Dog Park

San Elijo Road North, San Marcos, California 92078

San Elijo Hills Dog Park sits on a hillside with views across San Marcos toward the valley, and the elevation gain gives the place a breezy feel even on warm afternoons. The main park sprawls across fenced acreage with decent shade from mature oak and cypress trees scattered throughout, which matters when you’re up there without much relief. The ground is mostly decomposed granite with patches of grass, so paws won’t sink into mud, but dust does kick up if there’s been no rain for a while.

Dogs of all sizes run together in the main area, though there’s a separate enclosure for small dogs (typically under 25 pounds) where anxious or elderly dogs can move around without getting bowled over. Water stations are available throughout the park, and a few benches line the perimeter so you’re not stuck standing the whole time. The park is open dawn to dusk, and mornings before 10 a.m. tend to be quieter than late afternoons when the after-work crowd arrives with their dogs.

The location on San Elijo Road North gives it a quieter vibe than some San Diego County parks closer to town centers—you’re not pulling into a parking lot next to a shopping center. Getting there means heading into a more residential, slightly elevated area of San Marcos, and the drive itself tips you off that this isn’t a heavily trafficked spot. The hillside terrain is gentle enough that even older dogs manage the slight slopes, though young, high-energy dogs will appreciate that the park isn’t totally flat. Bring a water bottle for yourself since the elevation and exposure mean sun exposure is real on clear days.
