The off-leash area at Sandalwood Park sprawls across several fenced acres with a distinct split: a larger section for dogs over 25 pounds and a smaller, separate zone for under-25-pound dogs. The main field is grass with decomposed granite paths running through it, which holds up reasonably well in Santa Clara County’s dry months but can get muddy during winter rains. Both areas are open and fairly exposed, so the lack of dense tree cover means you’ll want to bring water and arrive early on hot afternoons—the park has water stations, but shade is limited to a few scattered trees around the perimeter.
Dogs have full run of their designated sections during posted hours. The small-dog area gives nervous or elderly dogs breathing room away from larger, high-energy play, and the layout means you can watch multiple dogs without much trouble. The park itself doesn’t charge admission and is maintained as part of Milpitas’ public park system.
Sandalwood sits on the edge of town near Clifford Lane, with parking right at the entrance. The surrounding neighborhood is residential, so weekday mornings before 10 a.m. tend to be quieter; weekend afternoons (especially Saturdays) draw crowds, particularly families with puppies testing out the small-dog section. The decomposed granite dries quickly after watering and is gentler on joints than pure concrete, though some dogs find the dust irritating if they’re prone to eye or respiratory sensitivity. Give yourself time to let your dog shake off before getting back in the car.
