Humane Society Silicon Valley 2017
It's official: Humane Society Silicon Valley is a model shelter. So says the Koret Shelter Medicine Program of the University of California at Davis, which announced in October that HSSV achieved model shelter status by demonstrating and documenting that it meets all 543 “must, should and ideal” standards set forth by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV). In fact, HSSV is the first shelter ever to achieve this milestone.

Meet the lovely Cheechoo, as fine a canine companion as ever was. When he landed at Humane Society Silicon Valley a few months back, this 8-year-old pit bull mix was suffering from an epic flea allergy; his skin may have been in sad shape, but his sunny disposition and eternal optimism never wavered. As he healed up, he occupied his mighty brain by learning an impressive repertoire of skills in HSSV's obedience program—including excellent leash manners. Cheechoo's a perfect gentleman who loves long walks and snuggling on the couch, especially if belly rubs are involved. He's loved by one and all at the shelter, but what he really needs is his own family, and some kind souls have even paid his adoption fees so money doesn't have to be an issue. Imagine coming home to those awesome ears. That smiling face. It could happen—get in touch!

Founded in 2010, The Perfect Dog takes dogs who stand a poor chance of adoption in the South Bay's shelters due to overcrowding issues, or the fact that their breed was overrepresented that week (Chihuahuas, anyone?), or they need a bit of medical or training attention. "If it needs help, we will do what it takes to find a way to help the dog," says Diana Rapa, founder of this all-volunteer 501(c)3 group. "We believe in giving every dog a chance and we believe there is the right home for every dog out there." Rapa, a professional dog handler whose own dogs include a deaf dog she's trained using hand signals, has some experience in the matter (she's also the founder of the Bay Area Deaf Dog Club, which has monthly play groups well worth checking out if you've got a deafie).
