Known as the “Best-kept Secret on the Central Coast of California,” Santa Margarita KOA sits on 69 acres carved into a hillside with mainly dirt roads and rustic charm. The setting feels genuinely remote and peaceful—the kind of place where you’ll actually see stars at night and hear nothing but wind and birds.

The campground offers RV and tent sites along with log cabins, yurts, and Deluxe Cabins that have full bathrooms and kitchens. If you’re traveling with kids, the giant Jumping Pillow is a real draw and gives everyone a chance to burn off energy. Fair warning: this isn’t a manicured resort. The terrain is rugged and steep, dirt roads mean dust, and the restrooms require climbing some solid elevation. But that’s part of what makes it feel authentic rather than polished.

Santa Margarita Lake sits nearby and still offers solid fishing, birding, hiking, and biking even when water levels drop. You can boat there too, though swimming isn’t an option. The real appeal of staying here, though, is the location as a home base. Hearst Castle is within reach for a day trip, as are Morro Bay and the Pismo Dunes. If you’re into wine country, there are hundreds of wineries scattered across the region. Ravine Water Park and local hot springs give you other options when you want to get off the property.

The staff genuinely seems interested in helping you plan day trips and can point you toward spots that match what you’re looking for. From US 101, take exit 211 at Santa Margarita, go about 1.7 miles and turn right on Estrada Avenue, which becomes West Pozo Road. Follow the signs toward Santa Margarita Lake and you’ll find the entrance. It’s only ten miles off the freeway, which makes it easy to access without feeling like you’ve left civilization entirely.
