Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, located in the foothills of Santee just 20 minutes from San Diego, offers a genuine camping experience where dogs are genuinely welcome—not just tolerated. Whether you’re escaping a cold winter or planning a weekend getaway with your family and dog, this award-winning campground provides plenty of space to spread out and actually relax.

The main draw here is the seven scenic lakes scattered throughout the preserve. You can fish, launch a boat, or walk your dog along the water’s edge on designated trails. The preserve has specific areas where dogs can swim too, which is great if your dog actually enjoys water—not all do, but the option is there. Beyond the lakes, there are hiking trails winding through the property, picnic areas with tables and grills, and playgrounds if you’ve got kids along.

Your accommodation options are flexible. You can camp in an RV site if you’ve got a rig, grab one of the cozy cabins for a more comfortable stay, or pitch a tent if that’s your style. RV sites have hookups, which makes a real difference on longer trips. The cabin setups are particularly convenient if you don’t want to manage cooking and sleeping arrangements from scratch.

Dogs can join you on the designated trails and designated swimming areas, so they’re not confined to your campsite the whole time. The preserve’s dog-friendly policies are straightforward—they let pets participate in the outdoor experience rather than making you leave them behind or keep them constantly tethered.

The setting really does feel like getting away. It’s rural enough that you don’t hear highway noise, but developed enough that you have actual facilities and don’t have to rough it completely. The seven lakes mean there’s usually some water activity happening, whether you’re interested in fishing, boating, or just watching the sunset with your dog at your side. Bring your own fishing rod if you fish, or just enjoy the trails and the general atmosphere of a working recreation area that clearly gets used by locals who know what they’re doing.
