The Santiago Creek Bike Trail offers a solid 6-mile paved route where you can walk or jog with your dog while staying right alongside the creek. It’s a genuine escape from pavement and traffic, with native vegetation and actual wildlife visible along the water—herons, egrets, and other birds you don’t see on neighborhood streets.

The trail runs from Hart Park down to Cannon Street, with a northern branch that extends from Walnut Avenue up to Collins Avenue, eventually connecting into Villa Park’s system. Two pedestrian bridges break up the route: one near Yorba Park south of Chapman Avenue, and another near the Grijalva Park Sports Center south of Walnut Avenue. These bridges add a little variety to what’s otherwise a straightforward out-and-back walk.

What makes this practical is the access points. Hart Park, Yorba Park, and Grijalva Park all sit right on the trail and have ample parking, so you’re not hunting for a spot or walking three blocks before you actually start your outing. You can pick whichever park works best for the length you want—hit Hart Park for a longer excursion, or use Grijalva or Yorba for something shorter.

The creek-side setting keeps things cooler than open trails, especially helpful on warmer Orange County days. The paved surface is easy on joints and paws, and you’ll see enough water and plant life that it doesn’t feel like you’re just walking pavement.

Keep your dog on a leash no longer than 6 feet the whole way—this is enforced, probably because the trail’s fairly popular and the wildlife needs undisturbed space. Go in early morning if you want fewer people and more wildlife viewing. The trail can get busy on weekends, particularly near the park entrances.
