Sardine Lake and Campground

990 Sardine Lake Road, Sierra City, California 96125

Sardine Lake sits about fifteen minutes north of Sierra City on Gold Lakes Road, where the water is so clear you can see the bottom at noon—it’s genuinely like fishing in an aquarium. The 27-site campground operates from late spring through mid-fall, with non-electric sites that have picnic tables and fire rings, which makes for decent evenings if you don’t mind the basic setup. Your dog can come along, but has to stay on leash the whole time, and you’ll need to pack out waste bags to keep things clean.

The lake itself doesn’t allow swimming, but the shoreline gives you quiet places to walk with your dog and take in the Sierra Nevada setting. If you want more to explore, there’s a short hike up to Upper Sardine Lake, which sits in a glacial bowl and feels more remote. The surrounding area works year-round—in winter it transforms into snow country where people come for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, though you’d obviously want to check conditions before bringing a dog out in that weather.

This is primarily a fishing destination, so the vibe is pretty mellow. Summers get busy enough that reservations make sense, but it’s not the kind of crowded campground where you’re dealing with constant noise. The setting attracts people who actually want to be outdoors rather than those just passing through. If you’re used to more developed campgrounds with amenities, this will feel rustic—there’s no running water at individual sites or hookups.

The location works well if you’re already in the Sierra City area exploring the region. Gold Lakes Road itself is scenic, and the drive gives you a sense of how remote the spot actually is. Bring firewood if you want a fire, check ahead during shoulder seasons to confirm the campground is open, and understand you’re signing up for a fairly primitive camping experience. The payoff is having a quiet place to camp with your dog where the main draw really is just being in the mountains away from noise.
