Susanville Ranch Park sprawls across 22 miles of scenic, non-motorized trails in Lassen County, offering everything from gentle meadow walks to serious climbs like Coyote Bluff and Horse Trail. You’ll find yourself moving through lush grassland one moment and dropping into Pauite Creek Canyon the next, with the creek itself providing a constant cool-down opportunity for your dog throughout the warmer months.
The southern section is where most dog owners head, and for good reason. The wide-open spaces let dogs move freely and splash in the creeks that wind through the area. If your dog likes to socialize and burn energy, this part of the park delivers. Off-leash walking is allowed in the southern portion, though keeping your dog close around other visitors and wildlife makes sense. The terrain varies enough that you can choose a mellow creek-side stroll or push yourself on one of the steeper sections if you’re in the mood for a real workout.
Timing matters here. Spring is when the trails are most pleasant—by summer, the heat can get intense, and winter rains make footing sketchy. Bring significantly more water than you think you’ll need since the park doesn’t have water sources. The good news is parking is straightforward and there’s no entrance fee, so this won’t put a dent in your budget.
One practical note: the wide-open landscape can feel pretty exposed in the middle of the day, especially in summer. Starting early gives you shade longer and cooler temperatures for your dog. The creek water looks inviting on a hot afternoon, but plan for a good shake-off before the drive home.
