Sutter's Landing Park sprawls across 166 acres along the American River in Sacramento, giving you plenty of room to move around without feeling crowded. The main draw for dog owners is the 2.5-acre off-leash dog park, which gives dogs room to run and socialize while you can actually watch them do it without squinting across a postage stamp of grass.

Beyond the dog park, the grounds include a three-quarter mile rubberized asphaltic trail that’s easy on joints and works well for dogs of different fitness levels. The trail winds through three acres of native habitat restoration, so you’ll see actual vegetation instead of just mowed grass. Basketball and bocce ball courts are scattered around if you want to bring other people along for the day, though honestly most visitors seem focused on the dogs and the river access.

The location matters here—you’re right along the American River Parkway, which means there’s actual water nearby. The park doesn’t have a designated dog swim area, but the river access gives you options depending on what you and your dog are comfortable with. In summer, even just being near the water helps when it gets hot.

The grounds feel genuinely spacious, which is rare in urban parks. You won’t feel like you’re navigating obstacle courses of other people and dogs. The rubberized trail stays relatively cool and is forgiving if your dog has any joint sensitivity. Parking is available on-site, and the park sits between downtown Sacramento and the broader parkway system, so it’s accessible without feeling remote.

If you’re planning to spend a few hours, bring water for yourself—the shaded areas are decent but not everywhere, especially in the dog park itself. Late afternoon visits tend to be less crowded than mid-day weekends.
