Sycamore Grove Campground sits right along the Sacramento River, just two miles south of Red Bluff, and it’s a solid spot if you want to camp with your dog without feeling like you’re roughing it too much. The campground has grass lawns, paved roads, and actual shade trees, which matter when you’re camping in the valley heat. Ten of the 30 sites have full RV hookups with 20, 30, and 50 amp electricity plus potable water, while the rest have the basics—tables, grills, fire rings, and vault or flush toilets with showers nearby.
The real draw here is the 4-mile paved nature trail that loops through the property. It’s wide and even, so it’s easy to walk your dog without fighting uneven terrain, and you get views of Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen on clear days. The trail winds through grasslands, wetlands, and oak woodland, so there’s actual variety as you walk. You’ll see wildlife—birds especially—and the landscaping changes enough that it doesn’t feel monotonous.
The Sacramento River is right there if your dog is into water. People fish for chinook and steelhead, and there’s a boat ramp if you’re thinking about getting on the water yourself. The campground also has a day use area separate from the camping section, so if you’re just passing through Red Bluff and want a place to stretch your legs and let your dog swim or play, you don’t need to commit to staying overnight.
The Sacramento River Discovery Center is on the property too, though that’s more for you than your dog. Getting there is straightforward—take the Antelope Boulevard/Highway 36 exit off I-5 if you’re coming from the north, then head to Sale Lane. You’ll see the Mendocino National Forest sign at the entrance. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the campground.
