Tabano Hollow Open Space spreads across a hillside in the Foothill neighborhood, with views that stretch toward the coastal range and enough elevation change to keep dogs genuinely engaged. The landscape is a mix of grass and decomposed granite with scattered oak trees for shade, so you get actual variety underfoot rather than an expanse of packed dirt.
Dogs have full run of the off-leash area, and there’s a separate fenced enclosure for smaller dogs if your dog prefers calmer company or you want to avoid the bigger-energy crowd. Water stations are available, which matters on Santa Barbara’s warmer days. The whole property stays open sunrise to sunset, and mornings—especially weekdays—tend to be quieter than the typical 4 p.m. rush when people swing by after work.
The site sits at the end of University Drive in the foothills, accessible from Foothill Road, and parking is straightforward with a small lot right at the entrance. Trails branch off into the open space beyond the main dog park if you want to extend your visit, though the fenced areas are the designated off-leash zones. The terrain has genuine hills—not extreme, but enough that dogs get a real workout and you’ll feel your own legs on the way back down. Bring more water than you think you’ll need on summer afternoons; shade helps but only covers portions of the grounds. The separate small-dog section is genuinely useful if your dog is under 25 pounds or just prefers a slower pace, and it keeps the younger, mouthy crowd from overwhelming senior dogs.
