Tenderfoot Trail

Mill Valley, Mill Valley, California 94941

The Tenderfoot Trail is a solid hiking option for dog owners in Mill Valley, Marin County. This 4.5-mile loop traverses the lush ridges above town and sits within a larger network of paths that gives you plenty of options to customize your outing. The trail itself offers moderate challenge—steep enough to feel like real exercise but manageable for most dogs in reasonable shape.

You can keep things simple with just the Tenderfoot loop, or link it with the Cypress Trail, Edgewood Road, and the Old Pipeline Trail if you want to explore further. If you’re feeling ambitious, the Dipsea Stairs add a serious workout—670 steps of real climbing that reward you with genuinely impressive views. Those stairs aren’t for every dog or every day, but they’re worth knowing about if you’re looking to push it.

Start from the trailhead off Edgewood Road, which is conveniently near the Mountain Home Inn. The trail climbs steadily, and you’ll notice the diverse plant life and occasional glimpses of the valley below. Dogs must stay leashed throughout, which is important both for their safety on the steeper sections and for respecting other hikers you’ll encounter.

Bring more water than you think you’ll need. The exposed sections don’t offer much shade, and the elevation gain means your dog will be working harder than you might expect on a “moderate” trail. Pack treats and be ready to take breaks if your dog needs them. The footing is generally solid, though some sections get rocky.

After you’re done, Mill Valley has several dog-friendly spots where you can grab a bite and let your dog rest. The ridgeline views you’ll see make for good photos if you’re into that sort of thing. Just call ahead to confirm current conditions and any temporary closures before heading out.
