The Arbor Inn Hotel in downtown Monterey sits just a few blocks from the waterfront, close enough that you can walk to Monterey State Beach without much effort. We stayed here with our dog and found the staff genuinely helpful about navigating the area with a canine in tow—they knew which nearby spots were dog-friendly and weren’t pushy about upselling us on anything.
The rooms have ocean views and are spacious enough that your dog won’t feel cramped. Ours had a comfortable bed, a sitting area, and windows that looked toward the bay. The hotel is pet-friendly without making a huge production out of it—no excessive fees or paperwork, just a straightforward acknowledgment that dogs stay here regularly.
Location-wise, you’re in a great spot. Cannery Row is a short walk away, and there’s decent access to the downtown area where most of Monterey’s restaurants cluster. We were able to grab dinner at several places within a 10-minute walk, and a few had patios where we could bring our dog. The hotel staff had good recommendations for which places actually welcome dogs on their outdoor seating areas, which saved us some trial and error.
The immediate neighborhood is pretty walkable. There are some small parks nearby, though if you want a proper dog park or a longer trail, you’ll need to drive. Breakwater Cove is nearby if you want to check out the water’s edge, though the beach itself has restrictions during certain seasons.
The main thing we appreciated was that everything felt low-key. There weren’t a ton of frills, but the rooms were clean, the staff remembered us when we came back to the lobby, and nobody made us feel like we were inconveniencing them by having a dog. If you’re looking to spend time exploring Monterey without dealing with a big chain hotel, this place works.
