The Beach Pit BBQ in Costa Mesa sits right in the middle of Orange County’s food scene, and it’s one of the few spots where you can actually sit outside with your dog while eating legitimately good barbecue. They do pulled pork, pork spare ribs, brisket, and chicken — the kind of stuff that takes hours to get right. The real draw for me was their banana pudding, which tastes nothing like the mix-from-a-box version you might be expecting. They also have “The Salad” if you want something lighter to balance out the smoky, rich barbecue flavors.

The outdoor seating area is genuinely spacious, which matters when you’re bringing a dog. You’re not crammed at a tiny table next to other diners — there’s actual room to settle in.
