The Hostel California (THC) in Bishop works surprisingly well if you’re traveling with a dog and want to stay somewhere with actual personality. It’s an adults-only hostel that draws climbers, hikers, and backpackers heading into the Eastern Sierra, and the whole place has that lived-in, creative energy you’d expect from a place built around adventure.

If you’re bringing a dog, you’ll need a private room—they don’t allow pets in the dorms. The key is getting approval ahead of time, so definitely reach out before booking. The private rooms give you space to settle in with your dog without worrying about disturbing other guests, which is considerate for everyone involved.

Beyond the dog-friendly aspect, THC gives you access to practical stuff that makes a real difference during a stay. There’s a full kitchen if you want to cook, a garden and patio to hang out in, and they provide free coffee plus communal food. They loan out bikes, which is handy for exploring Bishop without driving everywhere. If you’re into climbing, they even have crash pads available. Towels and linens come freshly folded, so you’re not hunting down clean bedding.

The vibe here is genuinely inclusive—it’s explicitly an LGBTQI+ safe space, and you’ll find the kind of crowd that’s actually interested in talking to other people. It’s the opposite of that sterile hotel experience. You’ll cross paths with people planning climbs on the surrounding crags, heading out to nearby trailheads, or just enjoying the desert landscape. Bishop itself is positioned right at the edge of some serious mountain terrain—the Inyo National Forest is immediately accessible, and plenty of hiking and climbing areas are within a short drive.

The hostel works best if you’re comfortable with communal spaces and want to be around other travelers, but you’re getting your own room with your dog, so you get privacy when you need it. It’s genuinely different from standard hotel lodging.
