The Petrified Forest in Calistoga offers a genuinely unusual walk through deep time—you’re moving among redwoods that turned to stone over 3 million years ago when volcanic ash buried them and minerals slowly replaced the wood. It’s the kind of place that makes geological time feel real in a way textbooks never quite manage.

The trails wind through stands of these massive petrified logs, some still partially buried in the ash matrix they’ve been locked in since the Pliocene epoch. Walking among them with your dog gives you both a sense of scale that’s hard to grasp until you’re actually there. The forest floor is mostly clear and easy underfoot, making it straightforward to navigate different route options depending on how much time you have.

This is Wine Country hiking without the crowds of some other Napa destinations. You’ll encounter other visitors and dogs, but it never feels overwhelming. The shade from remaining live oaks helps during warmer months, and the volcanic geology creates an almost otherworldly landscape that looks distinctly different from other Northern California forests.

Dogs are welcome throughout the property, and there’s a casual, genuinely dog-friendly atmosphere—staff seemed accustomed to seeing people visit with their companions. The museum building near the entrance has some exhibits explaining what happened here millions of years ago, which adds context before or after your walk. Bring water even though the trails aren’t particularly strenuous, since there’s no shade everywhere and the volcanic substrate can reflect heat.

The drive to Calistoga takes you through the heart of Napa Valley, so you could easily combine this with wine tasting stops or other attractions in the area. The forest itself is a solid hour or two of exploration depending on which trails you choose, and it’s genuinely educational in that organic way where you learn by seeing the evidence right in front of you.
