The Union Inn Hotel was built in 1880 by four itinerant French Canadians for $400, originally serving as a boarding house for hard-working miners and locals until the 1920s. The building had a brief reawakening in the 1950s, then cycled through years of vacancy, private residence status, and neglect before the David/Burney Family restored it into a proper destination in 2000. Now it operates as the Volcano Union Inn, combining a California Pub with a four-room bed and breakfast in the picturesque village of Volcano, deep in Amador County’s Gold Country.

The pub side is where most visitors gather. Dinner service runs Thursday, Friday, and Monday, while Saturday and Sunday offer both lunch and dinner. The atmosphere stays casual and unpretentious — you’ll find comfort food and service that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s the kind of place where you can show up with your dog and feel like a local immediately, not a tourist passing through.

The four guest rooms upstairs offer a chance to actually stay in this piece of Sierra Foothills history if you want to make a longer visit. Waking up in a restored 1880s building in a genuine Gold Country village beats another anonymous motel chain anywhere.

Volcano itself is small and walkable, with the Union positioned conveniently around the corner from Main Street and right next to Armory Hall. Street parking works fine, and there’s also a lot behind the Inn. The building sits naturally within the village rather than feeling inserted into it, which matters when you’re trying to get a real sense of what Gold Country was actually like. If you’re exploring this part of Amador County with your dog, the Union gives you both lodging and a reliable dinner option without needing to drive elsewhere.
