The Tuolumne River Canyon Trail in Groveland is a six-mile moderate hike that runs along the south side of the Tuolumne River, and it’s genuinely pleasant to walk with a dog. The well-maintained path is easy to navigate, and the scenery shifts noticeably through the seasons—spring brings wildflower displays that splash the landscape with color, while other times of year you get clear views of the canyon and water.

Your dog needs to stay leashed here, particularly because wildlife is present and the trail can have sections where the river gets close enough to be tempting. The Tuolumne River itself is the main feature, and you’ll hear it constantly as you walk—that steady rush of water really does create a calm backdrop to the hike. If you bring binoculars, there’s decent birdwatching along the way with various species moving through the riparian area.

One thing to know: during snowmelt season, water levels rise fast and can wash out sections of trail, so it’s worth checking current conditions before you go. This is especially important if you’re planning this hike in spring after a heavy snow year. The river also means water is available for refilling bottles, which is helpful on a six-mile walk.

The riverbank itself is nice for a break. Your dog can splash in shallower areas or rest in the shade while you have lunch. Bring water and snacks for both of you—the hike’s moderate but consistent, and shade comes and goes depending on where you are along the canyon.

The trail works well whether you’re getting your dog used to longer hikes or you’re a regular on Gold Country trails. Just plan around water conditions and bring what you need for the distance. The combination of the river views, open sections, and quieter moments makes it worth the drive out to Groveland.
