Tuolumne River Regional Park sprawls across over five hundred acres along seven miles of the Tuolumne River, stretching from the Mitchell Street Bridge all the way to the Carpenter Road Bridge in Ceres. The sheer scale of this place means you can spend an afternoon here and barely scratch the surface. The park divides into five major sections, including the Legion Park area near the airport, so depending on where you enter, you’ll get different experiences of the same river corridor.

Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the park, which opens up a lot of possibilities for exploring. The riverside trails give you that nice mix of shade and openness—you’re not walking through dense forest the whole time, but you’re not completely exposed either. The paths run along the water, so on warm days there’s usually a breeze, and your dog can get used to seeing the river move past rather than being stuck in a parking lot somewhere.

Because the park covers so much ground and has multiple access points, you can choose your route based on what you’re in the mood for. Want something flat and easy for an older dog? Head to one of the developed areas near the parking. Looking for a longer walk with more varied terrain? You’ve got miles of river to explore. The landscape here is pretty typical Central Valley—cottonwoods and willows along the water, open grassland in other sections—but that’s exactly why it works as a local escape. It doesn’t feel manicured or crowded, even when other people are around.

The park gets quieter during weekday mornings, which is worth noting if your dog isn’t great with other dogs or if you just want fewer distractions. Bring water for both of you since the shaded spots aren’t everywhere, and the ground can get pretty baked in summer. Parking is available at multiple locations depending on which section you want to access.
