Upper McCloud Falls

Upper McCloud Falls

McCloud, McCloud, California 96057

There are three levels to McCloud Falls in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest—lower, middle, and upper—each with its own character and appeal. The hikes are very scenic and offer chances to see various forms of vegetation and wildlife as you move between them. What makes this spot special is how accessible it all is. The trio of cascades can be seen on a 3.8-mile round-trip hike, and the individual stretches between falls are relatively easy. The hike from Middle to Upper Falls only takes about five minutes, so even if you’re not up for the full loop, you can still see multiple waterfalls without much fuss.

The drive to get there takes you through the town of McCloud off Highway 89. Once you take Highway 89 from Interstate 5 and head into town, you’ll continue east for 5.5 miles watching for signs to Fowler’s Camp and McCloud Falls. At the fork in the road, turn right (a left turn here gives you overlooks of the middle and upper falls if you just want a quick look). Continue another 0.7 miles past the campground and park at the picnic area by the Lower Falls. You’ll hear the water before you see it—just follow the sound to find the trailhead.

The water itself is cold and refreshing, and the canyon walls create a dramatic backdrop. Your dog will likely enjoy wading in the shallower areas between the falls, though keep them away from the main cascades where currents can be strong. There’s shade along much of the trail, which helps on warmer days. The picnic area at the Lower Falls has facilities, so you can make a full afternoon of it rather than just a quick hike.
