Waterfall Hike

Skyline Boulevard, Portola Valley, California

(650) 691-1200

In Portola Valley, San Mateo County, dog owners can treat their companions to an invigorating adventure on the Waterfall Hike in Coal Creek Open Space Preserve. Managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, this preserve sits along the ridgeline between Portola Valley and the coast, offering a wonderful escape into nature for you and your leashed dog. The preserve allows dogs on designated trails as long as they are kept on a six-foot or shorter leash at all times, making it a great option for well-behaved dogs who love hitting the trail.

The Waterfall Hike is a roughly three-mile out-and-back route that starts from Skyline Boulevard. From the trailhead, hikers follow Clouds Rest Road before turning onto the Meadow Trail, then venture onto Alpine Road and eventually Crazy Pete’s Road to reach the picturesque Coal Creek waterfall. Just under a mile into the hike, you will cross a small bridge over the waterfall that cascades down the ridge, creating a peaceful setting that makes the trek well worth the effort. The trail offers a blend of shaded wooded areas, open grassy patches, and a lively stream meandering through the landscape. Nature enthusiasts can keep an eye out for local wildlife like raccoons, skunks, and even blackberries growing along the trail during warmer months.

The best time to visit the Waterfall Hike is during the winter and early spring months when seasonal rains bring the waterfall to its most dramatic flow. However, the trail is accessible and enjoyable year-round, offering shady canopy cover in summer and vibrant foliage in autumn. The parking lot closest to the Coal Creek waterfall trailhead is located off Skyline Boulevard, right before Heacox Road, about four miles southwest of Old La Honda Road. Parking can fill up on busy weekends, so arriving earlier in the day is recommended.

This dog-friendly hike provides a great opportunity for dogs to stretch their legs and explore the outdoors alongside their humans. The moderate terrain is suitable for most dogs, though the trail does include some elevation changes and can be muddy after rain, so be prepared with sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water for both you and your dog. With its scenic views, diverse terrain, and that rewarding waterfall at the turnaround point, the Waterfall Hike in Coal Creek Open Space Preserve is a satisfying outing for dogs and their human companions.
