Westwood Hills Park in Napa is three miles of actual forest—the kind of place where you forget you’re in the middle of a city. Oak groves, open meadows, and views back toward Napa’s rooflines make this feel more like a mountain escape than an urban park. The trails are well-maintained and wide enough that you won’t feel crowded even on weekends.

My dog loved the variety here. You get shade under the oaks for most of the walk, then pop out into sunny meadows where the ground is soft and open. The trails loop nicely so you can do a quick walk or spend a couple hours exploring without repeating the same path. Most people seem to stick to the main routes near the parking area, so if you head out on the less-obvious branches, you’ll have plenty of quiet.

There are benches and picnic tables scattered throughout, especially near the parking lot and at a few trail junctions. I stopped at one of the meadow-side tables and my dog crashed in the shade while I ate lunch. It’s a genuinely peaceful spot. The trails themselves are dirt and packed earth—good footing even when it’s been damp, and minimal rocky sections that might bother sensitive paws.

The park is in the middle of Napa rather than out in Wine Country proper, which makes it convenient if you’re staying downtown or just want a quick nature break between exploring the area. It’s the kind of place locals clearly use regularly, which usually means the trails are well-loved and the amenities actually get maintained. Bring water for yourself and your dog—there’s no water available on the trails, and depending on the season, it can get warm in the open meadow sections. The parking area is easy to navigate and there’s plenty of space, even midday on weekends.
