Whitewater Canyon Loop Trail is a moderate, lightly trafficked loop trail featuring beautiful views of the Whitewater Preserve’s valley. Starting from the Whitewater Preserve Visitor’s Center, this 3.5-mile route takes you through a landscape that feels worlds away from the usual desert trails despite being easy to access from Palm Springs or Desert Hot Springs via I-10 West to exit 114 for Whitewater Canyon Road.
The trail climbs about 600 feet, but it’s manageable and rarely crowded, which makes the whole experience more peaceful for both you and your dog. As you ascend, the San Jacinto Mountains come into view along with the surrounding desert canyons, and the vistas only get better the higher you go. What really sets this hike apart is the Whitewater River running through the preserve — it keeps the canyon noticeably greener than you’d expect in this part of Riverside County, and there are spots where your dog can wade in and cool off during warmer months (though water levels vary by season, so don’t count on a full splash).
The moderate difficulty means it’s not too strenuous but gives you enough of a workout to feel like you’ve accomplished something. The light traffic is genuine here, so you won’t be dodging crowds of weekend hikers, which makes it easier to let your dog sniff around and enjoy the trail at their own pace. The scenery shifts as you loop back down, giving you different perspectives of the canyon and mountains.
Drive to the end of Whitewater Canyon Road to reach the visitor’s center parking area. Go early if you can — the cooler morning temperatures make the 600-foot elevation gain feel less punishing, and you’ll have a better shot at parking close to the trailhead.
