This hike near Chester starts at Willow Lake, northwest of town off Feather River Drive. You’ll follow Forest Service roads and turn right at the sign for Willow Creek—the trailhead with parking and restrooms sits on the east side of the lake. The 4.4-mile out-and-back route is rated moderate, though the first 3 miles feel easier as you head toward an active volcanic thermal area with its geothermal features and hot springs.
The landscape changes noticeably as you walk. You’ll start in forest around the lake, then transition into more open volcanic terrain as the elevation changes. The trail itself is well-used and reasonably clear. Even on a moderately busy day, you won’t feel crowded once you get past the initial section.
Here’s the important thing if you’re bringing your dog: portions of this hike cross into Lassen Volcanic National Park, where dogs aren’t allowed on trails. You’ll need to confirm exactly where the Park boundary is before you go and plan accordingly. Some people do just the lake portion and skip the thermal area section, but verify current conditions and restrictions with the ranger station or Forest Service office in Chester first—the situation can change seasonally.
If you can access the parts outside the Park, your dog will handle the terrain fine. It’s not technically difficult, just steady elevation gain. The volcanic ground is rocky in places, so paw pads do get some wear. The 1-hour-one-way timeframe assumes a moderate pace, but dogs often slow things down depending on how often they want to stop and investigate.
Water crossings are minimal, but there are some streams in the forest section. Bring enough water for your dog regardless—you’ll want it for the volcanic area where shade gets sparse.
