Woodward Park sprawls across 300 acres in the heart of Fresno, making it the largest park in Fresno County and a genuinely useful spot when you need space for your dog to move around. The dedicated dog park here lets dogs run off-leash in a contained area, which is the main draw for most people visiting with their pets.
Beyond the dog park itself, the Lewis S. Eaton Trail circles the perimeter and gives you miles of actual walking options. The trail winds through different sections of the park with reasonable shade in spots, and you’ll see ponds and natural areas that break up the landscape. It’s not a grueling hike, but it’s long enough that you and your dog can get a real workout if you want one.
The park has other amenities scattered throughout—playgrounds, sports facilities, and a BMX course—so if you’re coming with family members who want to do different things, there’s usually something for everyone. Just know upfront that the Shinzen Japanese Friendship Garden on the grounds doesn’t allow dogs, so you’ll be sticking to the main park areas.
Peak times get crowded, especially on weekends, so if your dog is reactive or you prefer quieter spots, consider going on a weekday morning. The parking lots fill up quickly during nice weather. Bring water because even though there are water features throughout the park, you’ll want to carry your own for your dog. The trails are mostly open without much tree cover, so summer afternoons can get hot—mornings or late afternoons work better then.
