Zuma and Trancas Canyons

Zuma Ridge Mtwy., Malibu, California 90265

Zuma’s name comes from the Chumash word for “abundance,” and you’ll understand why the moment you start exploring these canyons with your dog. The perennial streams running through Zuma and neighboring Trancas Canyons support thriving plant and animal life, creating a landscape that feels genuinely wild despite being just outside Malibu.

The trail system here offers several entry points depending on how much time you have. The Zuma Ridge Trailhead puts you on higher elevation routes with coastal views, accessed by taking Pacific Coast Highway to Busch Drive near Zuma Beach, then heading north until the road ends. If you prefer canyon walking closer to water, the Zuma Canyon Trailhead is the better choice—head north on Busch Drive, hang a right on Rainsford Place, then left on Bonsall Drive to reach the parking area. There’s also Newton Canyon Trailhead accessed from the 101 by taking Kanan Road south past Mulholland Highway; you’ll spot a paved pullout about 1.75 miles below Mulholland on the right side, just north of Tunnel 1.

Walking these trails with your dog, you’ll notice plenty of signs of wildlife if you pay attention. You might spot deer, rabbit, and coyote tracks in the dust. Look closely at the earth and you’ll catch glimpses of funnel web spider homes tucked into tiny crevices. The wren-tit is the canyon’s signature bird—you probably won’t see it, but you’ll definitely hear its distinctive call bouncing through the canyon, a sound locals describe as a ping-pong ball echoing off the rocky walls.

The combination of year-round water, dense vegetation, and relative isolation from developed areas makes this feel like a genuine wildlife corridor rather than a manicured park. Your dog will pick up on that energy immediately. Bring plenty of water for both of you and plan for afternoon traffic heading back toward PCH on weekends.
