California’s Greater Ontario region – better known as GOCAL – is an under-the-radar gem known for dog-friendly fun. Located about 45 miles east of Los Angeles and framed by the San Gabriel Mountains, it’s home to dynamic, sun-splashed communities like Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga. Expect great weather for year-round patio dining, bakeries with dedicated dog menus, retailers that welcome pups, and a wealth of parks to enjoy with four-legged family members.

Think of Greater Ontario as your gateway to the SoCal experience, complete with pup-friendly playgrounds and hiking trails. Leashed dogs are allowed on many paths and picnic grounds in San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. In the hills to the east, Lake Gregory Regional Park has a gated dog park and trails that accommodate on-leash pups. Don’t miss the scenic path running right along the lake. Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park has 150 acres of room to run, and the Pacific Electric Trail is a smooth, paved route that’s popular with dog walkers.

After a day on the trails, sit down for dinner at Rancho Cucamonga’s Lazy Dog Cafe. House-made dishes from the pet menu are served on a spacious patio. If you’d like a day off from hiking, do some window shopping at Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga. Leashed dogs are welcome at the open-air shopping center. In Ontario, swing by My Delight Cupcakery for decadent signature and seasonal treats. Pups love the Doggie Delights cupcake, a photo-worthy favorite made with carrot cake, honey and peanut butter. It’s capped with pet-friendly frosting and a dog biscuit.

Several hotels and vacation rentals across the Greater Ontario region make furry guests feel welcome. The Baymont by Wyndham Ontario’s pet rooms are just a mile from Schimmel Dog Park. The Hampton Inn & Suites Ontario accommodates dogs and offers complimentary self-parking. The Aloft Ontario-Rancho Cucamonga and Sheraton Ontario Airport Hotel are among other pet-friendly properties. The Element Ontario has an on-site Eureka! location that capitalizes on the city’s pleasant year-round weather. This restaurant serves burgers, sandwiches, craft beer and cocktails on a dog-friendly outdoor patio.
