There is a stretch of California coastline where the fog rolls in like a slow exhale, the bluffs erupt in wildflowers every spring, and nobody blinks when your dog walks into a restaurant. That is the Mendocino Coast, and April is arguably the best month to experience it with your four-legged travel companion.
Why April Is the Sweet Spot
Summer brings crowds. Winter brings rain. But early April? You get the best of everything: gray whales migrating north with their calves just offshore, wildflowers carpeting the headlands in lupine and poppy, and midweek vacancy at inns that are fully booked by June. Temperatures hover in the mid-50s to low 60s, which is perfect hiking weather for dogs who overheat easily.
The whale watching alone is worth the drive. From the bluffs at Mendocino Headlands State Park, you can spot spouts and breaches without a boat, and your leashed dog can be right there with you. The California State Parks page for Mendocino Headlands confirms dogs are welcome on leash on the bluff trails, though not on the pocket beaches below.
Where to Hike
The undisputed star for dog owners is MacKerricher State Park in Fort Bragg. The Haul Road trail runs along the coast for miles: flat, wide, and scenic enough to make your Instagram followers jealous. Dogs must be leashed, but the terrain is easy and the views are endless. On a clear April morning, you might see whales from the trail.
For something shorter, the Big River estuary trail out of Mendocino village offers a sheltered walk through coastal forest. It is quieter than the headlands and a good option on windier days.
Where to Eat (With Your Dog)
The Mendocino Coast has a surprisingly robust dog-friendly dining scene. Mendocino Cafe is a local staple with a heated patio where dogs are genuinely welcome, not just tolerated. Their Thai burritos have a cult following, and you will see plenty of dogs parked under tables on any given afternoon.
In Fort Bragg, check out the options along Main Street. Several spots offer outdoor seating that is dog-friendly, and the general vibe is relaxed enough that nobody is going to give your muddy retriever a side-eye after a beach walk.
Where to Stay
Mendocino has a solid roster of dog-friendly lodging. The Mendocino Hotel and Garden is a historic property right in the village with pet-friendly rooms. For a broader look at all your options, browse dog-friendly places to stay in Mendocino and you will find everything from classic bed and breakfasts to cozy cottages.
Fort Bragg tends to be a bit more affordable and has its own charm. The Beach House Inn and Seabird Lodge are both solid picks for dog owners.
Glass Beach: Go, But Know the Rules
Glass Beach in Fort Bragg is on every visitor’s list, and yes, you can bring your dog on leash. The sea glass that made it famous has thinned over the years (please do not take any), but the tidepools and the short walk down are still worth the stop. Go at low tide for the best experience.
Planning Your Trip
Mendocino is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from San Francisco via Highway 1 through the coastal route, or faster via Highway 101 to Highway 128 through Anderson Valley wine country. The 128 route through the redwoods is gorgeous and easier on dogs who get carsick on winding coastal roads.
April weekdays are your best bet for availability and quiet trails. Book lodging a couple weeks out because spring weekends fill up faster than you would expect for a town this small. And pack layers. The coast does not care that it is spring.
