Dog-friendly Santa Cruz: spring guide to beaches, trails, patios

Santa Cruz has always been one of those places that just gets dogs. The whole vibe — surfer-casual, outdoors-first, fiercely local — extends to how the town treats four-legged visitors. And in April, before the summer crowds descend and while the coastal wildflowers are still going strong, it might be the single best weekend trip you can take with your dog in California right now.

Here’s how to make the most of it.

Hit the beach (off-leash)

The crown jewel is Its Beach, tucked below West Cliff Drive near the lighthouse. It’s one of the few truly off-leash beaches in Santa Cruz, and your dog can run the sand, splash in the surf, and socialize with the locals — both human and canine. The beach sits at the base of a staircase that winds down the bluff, so it feels a little hidden even on busy weekends. Morning visits are best if your dog is shy; by noon it’s a full-on dog party.

For a mellower scene, Sunny Cove and Mitchell’s Cove are smaller pocket beaches where leashed dogs are welcome and the crowds are thinner. Just keep an eye on tide charts — some of these coves shrink fast at high tide.

Trails with room to breathe

If your dog prefers dirt under their paws, Santa Cruz delivers. Pogonip is a 640-acre greenbelt practically in the middle of town, with miles of trails winding through meadows, redwood groves, and open grassland. Dogs must be leashed, but the trails are wide and quiet enough that it never feels restrictive. The Spring Trail loop is especially good this time of year — wildflowers along the meadow edges and views of Monterey Bay through the trees.

For something shorter, the Emma McCrary Trail follows the blufftop along Pleasure Point with ocean views the entire way. It connects several small parks and overlooks, making it a perfect pre-dinner stroll.

Dog-friendly patios and cafes

Santa Cruz takes outdoor dining seriously, and most of the patios around town welcome dogs without a second thought. Browse the full lineup of dog-friendly restaurants in Santa Cruz on DogTrekker — there are over 40 listings to choose from.

A few standouts for patio hangs: West End Tap & Kitchen has a spacious back patio with craft beers on tap. The Picnic Basket, right near the boardwalk, does solid breakfast sandwiches and coffee with easy outdoor seating. And if you’re over on the east side, Pleasure Pizza has a big dog-friendly patio and some of the best slices in town.

Where to stay

Santa Cruz has a solid selection of dog-friendly hotels, from budget motels near the beach to boutique spots with more polish. Hotel Paradox, a couple blocks from the boardwalk, is a popular pick — the courtyard feels like an oasis and the pet policy is genuinely welcoming. For something with more character, the West Cliff Inn sits right on the bluff above the bay, and the Ocean Echo Inn puts you steps from the sand.

The practical stuff

Santa Cruz is about 75 miles south of San Francisco and roughly 30 miles from Monterey, making it an easy day trip or weekend base. Street parking downtown can be tight on weekends, but the municipal lots near the wharf and boardwalk are reasonable. Bring layers — even in April, the coastal fog can roll in fast and drop temperatures 15 degrees in an hour.

For the complete guide to everything dog-friendly in town — from dog parks to coffee shops to veterinarians — check out the Santa Cruz city page on DogTrekker. And if you’re extending the trip, Santa Cruz County has nearly 300 dog-friendly listings across Capitola, Aptos, Scotts Valley, and beyond.

April in Santa Cruz is the sweet spot: warm enough to enjoy, uncrowded enough to relax, and dog-friendly enough to feel like the whole town was built for you and your pup. Book it before everyone else figures that out.
