A Greater Palm Springs dog-friendly itinerary for four-legged fun

Hit the trails, stroll through vibrant midcentury neighborhoods, and soak up the sun in Greater Palm Springs. This dog-friendly itinerary walks you through the must-hit experiences across the nine-city region — trails, gardens, boutiques, patios, and hotels that treat your pup like family.

Morning: hit the desert trails

Start early, while the air is still cool. Whitewater Preserve is a desert standout — a flowing stream cuts through the landscape, giving your dog a rare chance to cool off mid-hike. Mission Creek Preserve layers natural and historic interest, with creek-side stretches that stay shaded into late morning. Or head to the Homme/Adams Park Loop in Palm Desert, where a flat, easy path opens into a fenced off-leash area at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains.

Midday: El Paseo and Moorten Botanical

Stroll along the palm tree-lined El Paseo in Palm Desert, browsing boutiques and chic cafes — many of which welcome pups with water bowls and treats. Then wander through Moorten Botanical Garden’s enchanting desert flora pathways. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the shaded cactus gardens make a cool retreat during the hottest part of the day.

Afternoon: hotel pool and downtime

Desert afternoons belong to the hotel. Check into a dog-welcoming resort like the Kimpton Rowan in Palm Springs or the Parker Palm Springs, and let your pup rest somewhere air-conditioned while you sit by the pool. This is the part of the day where a good hotel pays for itself — space to decompress, a comfortable bed for your dog, and a short walk from your room back to the restaurants.

Evening: patios, pints, and sunset

Once the sun drops, the desert wakes up. Head to Boozehounds for a dinner where pups get their own menu (think grilled chicken and “pupcup” desserts), or park yourself at a brewery like La Quinta Brewing Co. for a flight on the dog-welcoming outdoor patio. Jake’s in Uptown Palm Springs pairs charming front-patio dining with interior courtyard seating, and both are comfortable for dogs. Wrap the night with a short leash walk through a residential neighborhood — the Movie Colony or Deepwell Estates in Palm Springs both stretch out beautifully at dusk.

Stretch it into a weekend

Add a second day with a different anchor city — maybe a morning trail in the hills above Palm Springs, a Saturday afternoon at an art walk on El Paseo, and an evening drive out to see the windmills at sunset from Highway 111. Or build in a dog-friendly spa day at a resort in Rancho Mirage or Indian Wells. Greater Palm Springs rewards a slower pace: one or two experiences per day, with real rest between them. Trying to cram too much in is a recipe for an overheated dog and a cranky human.

With so many dog-friendly activities and attractions, this itinerary makes it easy to experience the best of Greater Palm Springs together. Pack your leash, bring plenty of water, and browse our full list of dog-friendly Greater Palm Springs hotels to pick your base. A well-rested dog and a well-timed day make all the difference in the desert.
