The iconic Golden Gate Bridge sets the backdrop for dog-friendly activities at Crissy Field, a true San Francisco gem. You’ll find off- and on-leash areas across this green expanse that borders the bay, along with picnic areas, coastal walking paths and postcard-perfect views. To see more of the city’s pup-culture hotspots, head to Fort Funston, Ocean Beach and beyond.

Fort Funston occupies a rugged, windswept swath of San Francisco’s southwestern shore. Dogs can run free in designated areas. (Bring a leash for places where hang-gliders, horseback riders and hounds might mingle.) Breezy Ocean Beach stretches along the city’s western edge. Furry friends are welcome on leash or under voice control.

Elsewhere, Golden Gate Park promises forested paths and grassy hills set on 1,000 acres. About 25 miles of trails wind through the Presidio, a former military post, and the new Presidio Tunnel Tops area is a family-friendly treasure with food trucks, playground equipment and incredible seaside views. Swing by Huntington Park for another only-in-San Francisco experience. Located across from Grace Cathedral, it’s a popular neighborhood hangout for pups and their people.

The Fairmont San Francisco sits atop Nob Hill, down the block from Huntington Park. It’s a dog-friendly property with gorgeous vistas and convenient access to the city’s famous cable cars and Union Square shopping. Tucked between the Presidio and Golden Gate Park’s Panhandle, the Laurel Inn accommodates pups in modern rooms.
