Ventura loves dogs

At the sandy beaches of Ventura, a Labrador Retriever wears a bright orange life jacket while perched confidently on a surfboard. Behind it, ocean waves rhythmically roll toward the shore, creating an inviting backdrop for water adventures with your dog.

A salt of the earth surf town at heart, Ventura is ultra-dog friendly and full of unexpected delights. From the beaches and trails to breweries and restaurants, Venturans love their animals—and welcome you to bring yours! Meander around Ventura Harbor Village, hike Harmon Canyon Preserve and shop and dine downtown on Main Street.

Dogs can splash around on leash at Oil Pier Beach, Surfer’s Point and Harbor Cove Beach (a.k.a. Mom’s  Beach). Camino Real Park has a fenced area where dogs can play nice and make friends with local pups off leash. Perched in the foothills above town with spectacular ocean views, Ventura Botanical Gardens allows leashed dogs on Wednesdays and Fridays and select free admission days.

Be sure to hit Dogtown VTA to shop for handmade dog accessories and treats. Relax and refuel at Fluid State Beer Garden, where the large patio is perfect for dogs. For more elevated fare, Peruvian Rumfish Y Vino offers a spacious patio with plenty of shade. Downtown sipping stops include Ventura Coast Brewing Co. and Topa Topa Brewing Co.

Pet friendly lodgings range from larger coastal properties such as Crown Plaza Ventura Beach and Pierpont Inn to boutique newcomer, Hotel San Buena located right downtown. The latter is in a historic landmark that was once an Elk’s Lodge, and dogs are welcome in the courtyard rooms. If glamping is more your speed and your pup is under 35 pounds, book a vintage trailer at Waypoint Ventura for a memorable stay.
