Cove Oasis loop, La Quinta

The Cove Oasis Loop, at the base of the Southern Santa Rosa Mountains, offers a relaxed stroll for families and their dogs. The mostly flat, gravel path begins at the top of the levee, a few steps into the Cove Oasis, a 114-acre open space set aside by the city of La Quinta.

Activity level: Easy, 1.8-mile loop. This trail works for all fitness levels, making it a popular choice for dog owners looking for a low-key outing. The path is well-maintained and wide enough to comfortably share with other hikers and their pups.

When planning your visit, early morning is the best time to hit the trail, especially during the warmer months when desert heat can be intense. The Cove Oasis is generally cooler and more pleasant before mid-morning, and you’ll also catch the sounds of bird calls and the sight of wildlife starting their day. Bring plenty of water for both you and your dog, as shade is limited along the trail. For more tips on staying safe in the desert sun, see our desert hiking safety guide.

Leash rules are strictly enforced here, so keep your dog on a leash no longer than six feet at all times. This keeps your dog safe and also protects the local wildlife. There are several spots along the trail where your dog can take a rest, but remember to bring waste bags to clean up after your pet.

Parking is available at the Cove Oasis parking lot, which offers easy access to the trailhead. It’s a small lot, so arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends.

As you walk, keep an eye out for native desert plants, including cholla and barrel cactus, and the occasional glimpse of lizards or cottontail rabbits. The loop provides a scenic mountain backdrop that makes for great photos. Just keep your dog on the trail and away from cactus — spines and paw pads are not a good mix.

After your hike, consider stopping at one of La Quinta’s dog-friendly restaurant patios. Old Town La Quinta is just a short drive away and has several spots where you can grab a bite with your dog at your feet.

The Cove Oasis Loop is a solid go-to for an easy desert walk with your dog. Pack your water, leash up, and enjoy the morning air. Looking for more dog-friendly hikes in Greater Palm Springs? We’ve got you covered.
