Yosemite Creek Campground is a backcountry option for dog owners who want to stay in Yosemite without the crowds and complexity of the valley floor. The 75 sites are first-come, first-served, which means no reservations needed but also no guarantees. It’s only open from July through early September, so timing matters. At just $10 per site each night, it’s genuinely affordable camping. Keep in mind the campground has a maximum capacity of six people per site, and RVs and trailers aren’t practical here—this is tent camping territory.
The pet policy at Yosemite Creek is straightforward: dogs are allowed in the campground itself, which already sets it apart from many other Yosemite accommodations. Your dog needs to stay on a leash no longer than six feet at all times and can’t be left alone. You can walk your dog on fully paved trails and roads throughout the park, but unpaved or poorly maintained trails are off-limits. Trails posted as pet-free are strictly enforced, including popular ones like the path to Vernal Fall. The Wawona Meadow Loop is an exception if you’re exploring further afield.
Bear safety is a real consideration here. Whatever food you bring for your dog needs to be stored exactly as you would store your own food—in bear-proof containers or locked in your vehicle. Bears don’t distinguish between kibble and human meals; they’re interested in all of it. Clean up after your dog immediately and dispose of waste in the provided trash receptacles.
The remoteness of this campground means fewer amenities than developed campgrounds, but also fewer dogs and less noise. It’s a legitimate camping experience rather than a parking lot with a fire ring. Bring everything you need because resupply options are limited once you’re in. Check the park’s website for the specific opening date each year before you plan your trip.
